Ismat Jahan from Bangladesh is studying a Master of Laws at Monash University with the support of an Australia Awards Scholarship.
Ismat was featured as the ‘face’ of the Australia Awards promotions in Bangladesh for study commencing in 2026. We recently caught up with her to ask about her Scholarship journey, how it has affected her personal and career growth, and what advice she has for prospective applicants.
Why did you apply for an Australia Awards Scholarship?
I applied for an Australia Awards Scholarship to pursue advanced studies in law, particularly regarding technology and innovation, which are emerging issues in Bangladesh’s legal framework. The existing legislation in my country lacks sufficient safeguards for data privacy, and I aspire to contribute to strengthening these protections.
As a previous recipient of the Australia Awards Short Course on Countering Violent Extremism, I witnessed Australia’s exceptional approach to addressing security challenges and leveraging technology for resilience. This experience deeply inspired me to further my education in Australia.
Australia’s global reputation for academic excellence, cutting-edge research and unparalleled student support made it my ideal destination. The Australia Awards Scholarship, as one of the world’s most prestigious programs, offered the perfect platform to transform my aspirations into reality. Receiving this Scholarship required dedication and perseverance, and I am honoured to be part of a community committed to creating meaningful change.
How has your Australia Awards Scholarship contributed to your personal and professional growth?
The Australia Awards Scholarship has been transformative, shaping me both personally and professionally.
On a personal level, I have developed critical thinking skills, the confidence to speak publicly and the resilience to navigate challenges with maturity. It has refined my ability to use technology effectively, communicate well, and approach problems with courage and curiosity. This journey has empowered me to dream bigger, work harder, and become a more compassionate and thoughtful individual.
Professionally, the Scholarship has significantly enhanced my leadership skills. I now approach workplace challenges with confidence and a solutions-focused mindset. The diverse environment in Australia has broadened my perspective on equity and inclusion, inspiring me to prioritise diversity in every project, regardless of nationality, race, gender, disability or beliefs. This experience has elevated my professionalism, making me more proactive, collaborative and supportive in teamwork. The Australia Awards Scholarship has truly been a catalyst for my growth and aspirations.

University aside, what has your life in Australia been like so far?
Life in Australia outside my university has been vibrant and enriching. I have actively immersed myself in community activities, cultural events, and opportunities to explore the country’s incredible history, arts and natural beauty.
Australia’s rich heritage, particularly that of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, deeply inspired me. I visited libraries, museums and cultural centres to learn about their stories and traditions, which gave me a profound appreciation for Australia’s unique history. I also embraced the country’s stunning landscapes by exploring its pristine beaches, national parks and historical landmarks. Engaging in outdoor activities and nature walks became a way to unwind and connect with the environment.
In addition, I participated in seminars, workshops and networking events organised by my faculty, local communities, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. A highlight was attending the Australia Awards end of year celebration at Government House in Melbourne and meeting the Governor of Victoria, which was an unforgettable experience. These activities not only broadened my horizons, but also helped me build meaningful connections, enriching my time in Australia beyond my studies.

What do you hope to do once you return to your home country?
Upon returning to Bangladesh, I aim to contribute to building a safer and more inclusive digital ecosystem through judicial, legislative and community-driven initiatives.
A key focus of my work will be developing specialised training programs for judges, prosecutors and law enforcement agencies. These modules will address crucial topics such as forensic evidence, digital crimes, online content regulation, and governance policies for the internet and artificial intelligence. By equipping legal professionals with the skills and knowledge to navigate the complexities of the digital era, I hope to enhance the judicial system’s ability to address emerging challenges.
Fostering a social movement to establish robust guidelines for the safe use of social media and the internet is equally important, particularly for children and teenagers. This will involve collaborating with policymakers, educators and parents to raise awareness about the psychological and social impacts of online spaces, advocating for digital literacy, and promoting responsible online behaviour. My ultimate vision is to bridge the gap between technology and justice, while empowering communities to embrace the digital age safely and responsibly.
What advice would you give to future Scholarship recipients?
My foremost advice to future Scholarship recipients is to focus on the courses they wish to study rather than just the universities they want to attend. Choose courses that align with your passions and have the potential to make a meaningful impact on your professional growth and your community. Additionally, embrace this opportunity with an open mind and a commitment to growth. Be ready to step out of your comfort zone, adapt to new environments and take on challenges with resilience. Engage actively not only in academics but also in extracurricular activities, cultural exchanges and networking opportunities. These experiences will broaden your perspective and help you build connections that last a lifetime.
Lastly, remember that this Scholarship is not just an individual achievement but a chance to contribute to a larger cause. Use this opportunity to develop solutions and initiatives that create positive, lasting change in your country and community. Stay curious, stay humble and always aim to give back. The Australia Awards Scholarship is a journey of transformation—embrace it fully and make it count.
